Event Details

Nonprofit organizations – especially smaller ones – often find it confusing when trying to determine which federal or state employment-related laws apply to them.

For example, how many employees do you need to have (and how do you count them) to provide family and medical leave?

When would you need to provide special language in a severance agreement?

At what threshold do you need to provide sexual harassment training?

In this session, employment attorney Lauren DeLuca will provide an overview of the various federal and state employment and labor laws and the thresholds at which they apply. This will include Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964, the Americans with Disabilities Act, the Age Discrimination in Employment Act, the Family Medical Leave Act, Delaware’s counterpart state laws, and more. Ms. DeLuca will also share some best practices to minimize your risk in employee-related matters, e.g., hiring, providing leaves of absence, and terminations.

Lauren represents individuals as well as businesses, non-profit corporations, and government entities in their employment-related and other matters before administrative agencies (such as the Delaware Department of Labor – Office of Anti-Discrimination and the Division of Unemployment Insurance, the Delaware Human Relations Commission, the Delaware Division of Professional Regulations, the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission, and the National Labor Relations Board), federal court, and the Delaware state courts. She also advises clients regarding personnel policies and handbooks and helps clients navigate personnel issues, including hiring and separation of employees.

Lauren is actively involved in the American Bar Association, serving as Delaware’s Young Lawyer Delegate to the House of Delegates; Delaware’s State Membership Chair; and a member of the Credentials and Admission Committee.  She is also past chair of the Delaware State Bar Association Labor & Employment Section and a member of the Women and the Law section. Lauren has been recognized as a Super Lawyers Rising Star for the years 2017 to present.

In the community, Lauren serves as Co-President of the Board of Directors of The Untours Foundation in Media, Pennsylvania, and as Co-Chair of the Parish Pastoral Council at St. John Chrysostom Church in Wallingford, Pennsylvania.
