Blackwell HR Solutions is assisting a local nonprofit organization with a confidential search for a Full Time Controller opportunity located in Wilmington, DE. The Controller will be directly employed by the nonprofit, additional details will be shared with candidates who are selected for interviews.

Status: Full Time, Exempt

Position Summary

Reporting to the nonprofit agency Director, the Controller is a key member of the organization’s management team, responsible for overseeing accounting, finance, and reporting operations. This includes financial management, grants management, planning and reporting, budget development, audit management and general accounting. They will work closely with the team to provide education on finance and accounting procedures and to explore how the accounting function can support program operations.

Key Responsibilities

- General Accounting: Manage day-to-day general ledger accounting processes (revenue recognition, cash receipts, inter-company transactions, bank and investment reconciliations, general ledger, fixed asset management, etc.) in an accurate and timely fashion in accordance with current accounting standards and internal control policies and procedures. Ensure accurate coding of invoices and prepare monthly invoices for contracts. Supervise all accounts payable/accounts receivable. Resolve all issues and ensure all accounts are accurate and payments are received/remitted on a timely basis.

- Financial Management: Prepare financial reports for the Board Treasurer; update forecasts with actual results and adjust future estimates as needed. Monitor, evaluate and update the financial management best practices and procedures for internal controls and processes. Carry out responsibilities in accordance with agency policies and applicable laws.

- Grant Management: Maintain and manage the financial systems and related file management including Federal and State contracts, grants, and grant-in-aid. Manage restricted and unrestricted donations and document expenditures of funds.

- Budget Development: Prepare and submit annual draft budgets. Work with all departments to develop departmental budgets, consolidate expenditure projections, and create organizational cash flow projections.

- Audit Mangement: Facilitate all annual financial audit and worker’s compensation functions for the agency. Produce all required documents for government programs compliance reporting.

- Handle all draw reports for government funded contracts on a timely basis. Assist auditors to file all required government reports, including IRS Form 990.

- Payroll: Provide support and ensure timely payroll processing.

- Leadership: Manage and supervise the accounting, payroll, and finance staff.

Education and Experience Requirements

- Bachelors’ degree or higher in Accounting, Business Administration, Finance, or related field or commensurate experience (10+ years) with non-profit financial management.

- Must have experience with MIP fund accounting software or similar nonprofit accounting programs, and advanced experience in MS Excel and other MS products.

- Demonstrated knowledge of financial and regulatory guidelines and procedures as it relates to 501(c)(3), solid understanding of nonprofit accounting and reporting, cost accounting, tax preparation, finance, and grant administration.

- Three years’ experience in compiling, analyzing, and interpreting financial data to ensure effective and efficient accounting of funds or to make projections for financial planning.

- Three years’ experience in analyzing financial problems, developing alternatives, recommending, and advising management on solutions.

- Knowledge of budget management and control which includes managing a budget for the purpose of keeping expenditures within the limitations of available appropriations and available revenue and maintaining, monitoring, projecting, and controlling a budget within set policies and procedures.

- Ability to multitask and thrive in a fast-paced environment; ability to work independently and complete duties and project with little direct supervision.

- Demonstrated supervisory experience and project management skills.

- Excellent communication skills.

Physical and Mental Requirements

- Remains in stationary position for extended periods of the day.

- Must be able to move about inside the office to access files, office equipment, etc. Must be able to lift or move objects up to 15 pounds. Sits, stands, walks, bends, stoops and climb stairs.

- Regularly required to see, talk, and hear. Regularly communicates with staff, vendors, contract managers, and others. Must be able to exchange accurate information.

- Must be able to read, analyze, interpret and deliver effective presentations around complex documents and data.

- Must be able to respond effectively to sensitive inquiries and/or complaints.

- Must be able to understand complex problems and to collaborate with others and explore alternative solutions.

- Accurate and timely attention to detail.

- Must be able to organize and prioritize work.

- Must be able to make decisions and effectively communicate with the team.

- Must be able to communicate effectively in writing and orally. Must be able to utilize a telephone and to hear and speak.

- Must be able to compute, analyze and interpret statistical data.

Working Conditions

- Works in a professional office environment and routinely uses standard office equipment.

- Must be able to work 40 hours a week, mostly during regular business hours.

- Occasional evening and weekend hours are required.

- Regular onsite attendance is essential.

- Business-related travel is minimal and local.
