Director of Development

Classification: Part-Time (30 hours per week), flexible hours and location, no benefits
Reports To: Executive Director


Supporting Kidds (“SK”) mission is to provide a compassionate pathway to healing for grieving children and their families, and to empower the community to support them in the grieving process. We believe that 1) when provided with support and information, grieving children and their families can embrace their own capacities to heal, 2) a knowledgeable and caring community is an essential aid in this process, and 3) no child should ever grieve alone.

SK was established as a private, non-profit organization in November 1989. It remains the sole non-profit organization serving the needs of bereaved children in Delaware. We provide individual counseling, and group support to children ages 5-18 at our Center in Hockessin, in schools and at community sites and events.

Position Summary

The Director of Development is responsible for planning, implementing and overseeing all aspects of fund development activities for Supporting Kidds, Inc., in collaboration with the Executive Director (“ED”).

As an integral part of the team, there is a focus on building relationships with donors and sponsors to ensure sustainability for our programs, while providing administrative support where needed. This position requires the competency to secure funding with an objective of $500,000-$800,000 annually.

The ideal candidate is a strategic thinker, skilled communicator (both written and oral), a good listener and demonstrates the passion needed to advance the mission of our organization through strong and sustainable development efforts. The success of this position requires strong collaboration with the Executive Director, staff and community.

Primary Duties / Responsibilities

Development Planning and Management

  • Develop and implement a comprehensive fundraising plan to meet annual revenue goals.
  • Work closely with the ED to develop fundraising strategies and goals.
  • Monitor and analyze fundraising data to evaluate performance and adjust strategies as needed.
  • Work collaboratively and oversee event projects coordinated by the Development and Community Engagement Coordinator (“CEC”).

Donor Cultivation

  • Identify, cultivate and solicit major gift prospects, as well as corporate and foundation donors.
  • Analyze development and donor information to build lasting relationships.

Grant Application and Administration

  • Research foundation, city, county, state, federal and corporate grants that are applicable to SK needs.
  • In collaboration with the ED and CEC, write various grants for programming and other related needs.
  • Maintain grant calendar to track deadlines, submissions and reporting requirements.
  • Ensure compliance with grant guidelines and manage post-award reporting, in collaboration with ED and applicable staff.

Fundraising Events

  • Coordinate fundraising and other organizational events in collaboration with CEC, including leading the sponsorship deliverables and all logistical and marketing plans for the Annual Hearts That Heal Gala.
  • Plan and execute special events that engage donors and raise funds for the organization, in collaboration with CEC.
  • Track success of fundraising efforts, including response rate of donors and attendance at events.

Other Responsibilities

  • Recruit, manage and lead a team of fundraising volunteers, in collaboration with CEC, providing guidance, training, and support as needed.
  • Collaborate with the ED to provide effective donor communications and marketing materials.

Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree is preferred in nonprofit management, social services, communications, public administration, or related field.
  • Required: At least 2 years of experience in fundraising and donor engagement with a proven track record of securing major gifts and meeting fundraising goals.
  • Required: Excellent written skills with the ability to craft compelling and heartfelt messages.
  • Grant writing and event management experience is preferred.
  • Experience using donor management software, such as Network for Good, for fundraising purposes and ability to create reports as needed.
  • Computer literacy in Microsoft Office Suite (Excel, Word, Publisher, Power Point, Outlook) required; Canva experience is preferred.
  • Experience with data collection, entry and presentation.
  • Strong organizational skills and ability to adapt.
  • Dedication to and passion for grieving children and families.
  • Reliable and self-motivated worker.
  • Excellent verbal and written communication skills as well as interpersonal skills.
