Position: Director of Healthy Communities

Reports To: Sr. Director of Unified Champion Schools

FLSA Status: Full Time Exempt

Description

The Director of Healthy Communities has overall stewardship, operational, and strategic responsibilities for the Healthy Communities initiatives. This includes but is not limited to Young Athletes, Healthy Athletes, Health Messengers, Fitness Captains, and Community Fitness. This position will also supervise the athlete leaders, mentors, and the annual conference for the Athlete Leadership Program.

Major Responsibilities

• Develop a Healthy Communities Project Plan outlining the objectives, activities, performance measures, timelines, and budget needed to achieve the Healthy Communities Impact Grant.

• Implement the activities outlined in the plan, manage the budget, operations, and coordinate with the various departments of Special Olympics.

• Recruit medical volunteers and oversee health screenings for the athletes.

• Develop necessary relationships to implement and expand the Young Athletes in the schools and recruit qualified individuals to manage the programs in the community.

• Create a consistent curriculum of activities for current and new Young Athlete programs to further align what is being offered at both schools and community.

• Develop and implement a transition plan for Young Athletes into the community program at the age of 8.

• To supervise the Athlete Leadership Program, which includes empowering the voice of athletes in our movement through trainings, and overseeing the area athlete leaders, mentors, and the annual ALP’s conference.

• Recruit and train athletes to become Health Messengers and Fitness Captains.

• Implement regular review and reflection cycles including participation in conference calls with Special Olympics International and other Healthy Community project teams.

• Will assist in the organization and execution of the Summer Camp programs including the selection process of athletes to attend, planning of events, and supervision of the program.

• Support sports tournaments, fundraisers, and other statewide events.

• All other duties, as assigned.

Qualifications

• Bachelor’s degree in the field of community health, social work, special education, early childhood education, or a related field.

• Equivalent work experience of 2-4 years.

• Proficiency with Microsoft Office programs including Word, Excel, and Outlook.

• Ability to multi-task and meet deadlines in a fast-paced, ever-changing environment.

• Willingness to travel statewide

• Able to occasionally lift and move up to 40 pounds.

• Must be able to pass a background check.

Compensation

o Salary range $55,000 - $65,000

o Full Medical & Dental Benefits, 100% cover for individuals

Schedule

o 40 hours/week on site

o Nights and weekends as needed
