First State Educate: School Board Consultant Opportunity

First State Educate, is a nonprofit organization based in Delaware focused on strengthening local leadership and school boards to improve student outcomes. Its mission is to empower Delawareans to drive improvements in education by providing resources, training, and support to school board members and candidates. FSE emphasizes community engagement, good governance, and collaboration to create impactful and lasting change in schools.

In this role, the School Board Consultant will act as the primary liaison between First State Educate and the unique communities in downstate Delaware. The consultant will leverage local insights to tailor professional development programs, trainings, and outreach efforts that align with the specific challenges and opportunities in that particular area. By working closely with our most seasoned consultant, this consultant will contribute to a cohesive strategy that supports First State Educate’s mission across Delaware, while also addressing the distinct dynamics of southern Delaware.

As part of a state-wide initiative, the Consultant will coordinate with other county consultants to share best practices and collaborate on strategies that drive educational improvements across Delaware. This role requires a deep commitment to community engagement and educational equity, with an emphasis on building trust and sustainable relationships within the community. The consultant will engage in regular dialogue with school board members, district leaders, and local families to ensure that the programs and resources offered are directly relevant to their needs.

The ideal candidate will possess excellent time management skills, be an independent thinker, experience in community organizing is a must, and the ability to work independently. Organizational skills are a must. A self-starter with established connections in Delaware public schools, the consultant will bring valuable local insights and a proactive approach to problem-solving. Additionally, the candidate must reside in southern Delaware to maintain close ties with the community and respond effectively to local needs. Bilingual fluency is preferred but not required.

Position Information

  • Part-time/Remote/Flexible Hours
  • Required to attend (either in person or virtually) monthly school board meetings; other hours are largely flexible provided you are an independent self-starter who can meet deadlines
  • Reports to Executive Director and Lead Consultant
  • Compensation based on experience and expertise

Desired Qualifications

  • Community Engagement: Proven experience as a community organizer or in roles requiring strong community engagement skills.
  • Project Management: Excellent time management and organizational skills with the ability to work independently and as part of a team.
  • Adaptability: Ability to balance adherence to program guidelines with the flexibility to customize solutions for local needs.
  • Initiative & Teamwork: A self-starter with a strong work ethic and the ability to work collaboratively towards shared organizational goals.
  • Communication & Presentation: Excellent written and verbal communication and presentation skills.
  • Education & Community Experience: Understanding of the public school system and demonstrated experience working with communities and families.
  • Professionalism & Reliability: High level of professionalism, reliability, and commitment to the project.
  • Geographic Location: Reside in the southern region of Delaware.
  • School Board Experience: Preferred experience working with or supporting school boards.
