Are funders increasingly asking you to include program logic models in proposals or reports? Do you know how to prepare a program logic model that effectively communicates your programs’ key elements and anticipated outcomes? How realistic are the outcomes you’ve identified in your model? Does creating these models induce migraine headaches?!

Two social scientists share tips on how to develop and refine a five-star program logic model that helps you and your audience better understand the “theory of change” that drives your program. They will show examples of these tools to help allay fears that many people have about the process of program logic modeling.

Description

The hour long webinar will take place on Zoom on August 10, 2022 from noon to 1 pm EDT. Content is for general audiences with little to no experience at developing program logic models; however, we welcome participants of all experience levels. Thanks to a grant from the Longwood Foundation, the session is free to DANA members and $25 for non-members.

By participating in this event, the facilitators hope you will learn:

  • How and when a program logic model can be used
  • The difference between an organizational logic model and one that describes a particular program
  • The benefits and drawbacks of program logic models
  • The main ingredients of logic models
  • What makes for a strong or weak program logic model (i.e., best practices)
  • How to develop a program logic model like a “pro”

Kelly Feighan and Megan Richardson are from the Research and Evaluation Group at the Public Health Management Corporation (PHMC), which serves clients in all sectors and aims to build healthier communities. The facilitators strive to bring participants together in a friendly, nonjudgmental online environment for candid discussions about best practices.

About the Facilitators: Kelly Feighan, PhD, has been measuring program outcomes since the Jurassic Age, when the United Way published one of the first logic modeling handbooks that remains one of the “greats” today. She has provided technical assistance to nonprofits in the area of outcome measurement, evaluated 100+ social service programs, and supported agencies with a wide range of research and evaluative services (i.e., needs assessments, survey design, analysis, and reporting). Kelly earned a master’s degree in sociology from the University of Maryland at College Park and a PhD in the same field from Temple University. She and Megan worked at Research for Better Schools before merging the organization with PHMC’s R&E Group in 2016. Her professional goal in life is to “help people use evaluation for good rather than evil.”

Megan Richardson, MA, is a Senior Project Manager at PHMC who leads evaluations of a wide range of education- and health-related initiatives, such as professional development programs for K-12 and preservice teachers, interventions in postsecondary STEM education that are designed to strengthen students’ skills, and programs designed to help teach the public healthier habits to reduce the effects of disease. Ms. Richardson holds a master’s degree in sociology and education from Teachers College, Columbia University and a bachelor’s degree in sociology and urban studies from the University of Pennsylvania.
