“When a board commits to generative governance, it gets one step closer to solving future challenges.”

Makiyah Moody

In their path-breaking book, Governance as Leadership: Reframing the Work of Nonprofit Boards, Richard Chait, William Ryan and Barbara Taylor invited us to expand our understanding of the work of nonprofit boards beyond their fiduciary role. They articulated 3 “types” of governance – fiduciary, strategic and generative – asserting that effective board governance requires engagement in all 3 arenas.

In this workshop we will review the 3 models described by Chait et al. and consider how we can move our boards beyond fiduciary and strategic to the work of generative “sense-making.”

As a result of this workshop you will:

  • Understand the differences between fiduciary, strategic and generative governance.
  • Understand how your board operates in these three areas.
  • Leave with various tools that you can use to move your board toward generative governance.

This in-person workshop is recommended for executive directors and board members. Organizations are encouraged to bring multiple representatives.

Please note that masks are currently required in all public spaces in the Community Service Building regardless of vaccination status.

Instructor: Pamela Leland, PhD, DANA’s Chief Learning Officer will facilitate this workshop. Dr. Leland brings more than 30 experience in consulting, teaching and executive leadership to her role with DANA.
