From Unconscious to Conscious...Through Cultural Humility
The current state of affairs relative to social justice issues (race, gender, sexual identity and expression, religion, and socio-economic status), with particular emphasis on racism, shows us that the need for diversity, equity and inclusion in our society is greater than ever.
The diversity and inclusion concept of cultural humility is a current instrument being employed by institutions and organizations that seek to achieve cultural transformation. Through conscious consideration, we can be proactive in preparing for and adhering to the inevitable challenges and changes in society.
This session will challenge participants to think about their own personal biases and collectively learn to truly embrace, appreciate, and live communally with those who are different through an exploration of cultural humility.
Specifically, participants will:
- Define your own personal culture/identity: race/ethnicity, age, gender, sexual orientation/identity, religion, education, socio-economic status, etc.
- Identify your personal biases and assumptions about people with different values than yours?
- Challenge yourself in identifying your own values as the “norm”
- Identify strategies for facilitating “difficult dialog” in the workplace
Topics covered in the session include:
- Identity Circles activity focusing on self-identified social constructs, intersectionality, and personal sharing of stories of pride and pain. This requires small group participation.
- Exploring cultural exclusion terminology (concept of “other,” racism, prejudice, stereotype, unconscious bias, and microaggression). Videos are also used to provide a visual medium for learning.
- Deep dive into the concept of Cultural Humility (exploration of tenets, comparison to cultural competency, and practical employment of concept). Videos from the creators of the concept will be shown as well.
About Juliana Mosley, PhD
Ph.D. Juliana Mosley, who has served the field of education for more than 20 years currently serves as the Chief Diversity, Inclusion & Community Relations Officer at Chestnut Hill College in Philadelphia.
Juliana enrolled in her doctoral program at 24 years old and graduated with her Ph.D. at the young age of 26, making her one of the youngest doctoral graduates in Miami University’s history and the first Educational Leadership student to complete the degree in less than two years.
Juliana also serves as a consultant and trainer providing training and development workshops in leadership transition, strategic planning, student development, and diversity and inclusion. She has presented at regional and national conferences, universities, non-profit organizations, government agencies, corporations, and has led a TEDx Talk.
Her commitment and service to education and the community is evident in her honors as a Philadelphia Tribune 2019 Woman of Achievement honoree; recipient of the Student Leadership and Success Award for Administrators (2015), Ohio Magazine’s Excellence in Education Awards for 2003, and an inductee to the Kaleidoscope Magazine 2004 Forty/Forty Club.
Juliana received a B.S. degree in Business Education from Ball State University (IN), a M.A. in Curriculum and Teacher Leadership with concentrated studies in Urban Education, and a Ph.D. in Educational Leadership, both from Miami University (OH). Juliana seeks to educate and train people to engage in difficult dialog through cultural humility to make the unconscious conscious.
