Whether you are a new board member who is seeking to learn the basics of board service, an experienced board member looking for a refresher, or simply someone considering board service, this hour-long workshop covers everything you need to know about the fundamentals of board service. Topics of discussion will include:

  • The key differences between a nonprofit organization and a for-profit.
  • The role of a nonprofit board and board member.
  • A deep dive into the fiduciary responsibilities of a board member.
  • Typical board activities and best practices.
  • How to select a board that's right for you.


You'll leave our workshop with a better understanding of the role the board plays in a nonprofit, and better prepared for a fulfilling experience as a nonprofit board member! At the end of this event, participants will:

  • Gain insight into the value of board service.
  • Learn about the fiduciary responsibilities of a board member and the key activities of the board.
  • Be empowered as board members and better able to select a board that's right for them.

About the Speaker:

As Program Director for DANA, Daniel works to connect nonprofit organizations with community members interested in board service.  Before joining DANA, Daniel served as a district director for the Boy Scouts of America, Del-Mar-Va Council, and as assistant director of programs for the Girl Scouts of Black Diamond Council. Daniel hails originally from West Virginia, where he studied history at West Virginia University before earning a master’s degree in business administration from American Public University.
